Bayern easily defeated Barcelona 8-2 and made it through to the semi-finals.
For 90 minutes, Hans-Dieter Flick’s players gave a rather phenomenal impression of power.
Lionel Messi’s Barça were not able to resist for long, bursting into action in the first half.
Bayern destroy Barça in Champions League quarter-final 2019/20
The start of the game heralded a great night, but not such an imbalance. Two goals and a handful of clear-cut chances filled the first ten minutes.
Thomas Müller opened the scoring in the fourth minute after a one-two with Robert Lewandowski in the middle made possible by a cross from Ivan Perisic (1-0).
Three minutes later, David Alaba fired past his own goalkeeper when he was under little pressure from the Catalan side (1-1).
Bayern almost broke again in the 20th minute when Messi hit Manuel Neuer. But the best attack of the competition would soon come off.
Serge Gnabry kept out Perisic, who overran and shot low. (1-2).
The break came in the wake of a lightning bolt from Gnabry’s foot, which Thiago Alcantara put into orbit (1-3), then Müller cut at the near post to score a double (1-4, 30th).
Bayern continued to dominate after the break, but conceded Luis Suarez’s first Champions League goal in five years away from home (2-4, 57′).
Remontada? Not a chance.
The fifth goal was scored by Kimmich, with the elusive Alfonso Davies pulling one back (2-5, 63rd). Bayern – five-time winners – were able to turn their fortunes around and score three more goals as they looked to savour their place in the semi-finals against three clubs who had never reached the final
Bayern therefore won by an incredible 2-8 and became the first team in history to score eight goals in a Champions League knockout round. Did you say historic match?
In the semi-final next Wednesday, the Bavarians will take on Manchester City or Lyon, who meet in the last quarter on Saturday.
Gerard Piqué, Barcelona
We can’t play a match like that in Europe, it’s very hard to live with, we all have to think about it, we’re going to have to make changes at the club. We all have to look at each other, think about it and decide what’s best to take Barcelona forward. We’re not up to standard. What happened today is unacceptable.Gerard Piqué
