This is the first time since the 2015/2016 season. Nevertheless, the clubs have been active with several big hits. Here are the 10 most expensive recruits of the summer.
There is a lot of money in the world of football, but a little less at the moment. Due to the health and economic crisis, the clubs have been more reasonable this summer. In fact, it was the first time since the 2015/2016 season that there were no transfers costing more than 100 million euros.
By way of comparison, that summer Kevin De Bruyne was a record finish for almost 76 million euros. And for this 2020/2021 edition, the most expensive transfer was from Kai Havertz to Chelsea. The 21 year old German attacking midfielder joined the Blues for 80 million euros excluding bonuses.
A simply mind-boggling sum for Chelsea, which ranks three players in the top 10.
In second place is Arthur Melo (24 years old) who joined Juventus from FC Barcelona for 72 million euros. The Brazilian midfielder is a star recruit for the Bianconeri mercato. The podium is completed by another Serie A recruit.
Excellent with Lille last season, Victor Osimhen (21) convinced Napoli to put 70 million euros on the table excluding bonuses. The Nigerian striker has become the biggest transfer in Partenopei history.
Three Chelsea players in the Top 10
In fourth place is a new defender paid a fortune by Manchester City. Thus, Ruben Dias (23) joined the Sky Blues for 68 million euros + 3 million euros in bonuses and will try to stabilise the English club’s defence.
In fifth position, we find Miralem Pjanic who arrived at Barcelona FC from Juventus as part of the exchange with Arthur Melo for 60 million euros. In sixth place is a Juventus player … but for his transfer to Atletico Madrid.
Alvaro Morata, who has been on loan from Chelsea since winter 2019 with a compulsory purchase option of 56 million euros, saw Atletico Madrid pay this sum before lending the Spanish striker with a purchase option to Juventus.
He is a short header ahead of Timo Werner, who arrived at Chelsea from RB Leipzig for 53 million euros. That’s a little more than his new Blues team-mate Ben Chilwell. The former Leicester left-back cost the London club 50,2 million euros.
Finally, there are two players in ninth place. They are Mauro Icardi who left Inter Milan for Paris Saint-Germain and Thomas Partey who was lured away by Arsenal at Atlético de Madrid. Both players cost 50 million euros.
