Six years after his arrival, Luis Suarez left FC Barcelona and his soul mate Lionel Messi. The Uruguayan striker joined Atlético Madrid when he was regularly announced for Juventus to succeed Gonzalo Higuain.
The former Liverpool player returned to this choice, in an interview with the official media of his new club: “The motivation to play for a big Spanish club pushed me to take this decision, Atlético Madrid is one of them.
It has great players and is always fighting to be up there (in the standings, editor’s note), has a very motivated public, people who want you to play here, it’s an extra motivation. Seen from the outside, the way of fighting and the intensity that Atlético puts into it also motivates you, it’s an added bonus in the conversation with the coach or the people at Atlético”.
The Uruguayan player is also the influence of his new coach and former team-mate Antoine Griezmann on his choice.
“I spoke with Simeone and that was a plus, it motivates you, the way he talks to you convinces you even more. Godin and Griezmann have told me nothing but positive things about Atlético, they have made history at this club and have helped me with everything I needed in Madrid and I am very grateful to them for that”, added the new colchonero.
The 9 for Luis Suarez with Atletico Madrid
New Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez was able to discover his new jersey number.
The capital club revealed the jersey number assigned to the former Liverpool player. The 33-year-old will play in Diego Simeone’s squad with the number 9, worn last season by Alvaro Morata who left for Juventus Turin. A number he knows well and which should bring him good luck. Suarez should even be able to start under his new colours this weekend in the championship against Granada.
