The Football Observatory has revealed the list of the most expensive players of the five major European championships. Estimated at 165 million euros, Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford is in the lead ahead of Erling Haaland (Dortmund) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool). Last year’s leader, Kylian Mbappé (Paris-SG) is relegated to 5th place. Lionel Messi is only 97th, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar not even in the top 100… Explanations.
There is supply and demand, inevitably. But there is also the reality of the market. The one that the Football Observatory lists in its latest report, listing the highest transfer values at the beginning of 2021. The “fair” price of players, in a way, reevaluated by taking into account a sum of criteria.
In this little game, Kylian Mbappé is no longer the most expensive player in the five major European championships. The Paris-SG striker, who dominated the rankings last year at over 200 million euros, has now been downgraded to fifth place and is valued at 149 million euros.
This is less than Marcus Rashford (165 million euros), the most expensive Manchester United player on the market, Erling Haaland (152 million), Trent Alexander-Arnold (151 million) and Bruno Fernandes (151 million).
But it is also significantly more than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, described as the best players in the world in activity, respectively 97th and 131st in this ranking at 54 and 47 million euros, but also Neymar, for his part, went from a transaction at 222 million in 2017 to an evaluation at 32 million in January 2021.
