One of the most things we see on football players after long jogging on the pitch is their spit on the ground, but why that? Is it scientific or just spitting?
Several studies have shown that exercise increases the amount of protein produced in saliva, especially a type of mucus called MUC5B. This mucus makes the saliva thicker and therefore harder to swallow, so it is best to spit it
It is not clear why we produce MUC5B mucus when exercising, but it may be because we breathe through our mouth more, so the mucus stops the mouth from drying out.
Some sports, such as basketball and tennis, is not allowed for spitting and the player may get penalized, but in football and rugby, it is not. Players are free to get rid of saliva.
The Former Nigerian international goalkeeper and Olympic Gold-winner Joseph Dosu said “It is not an attitude, when players are being choked with the air, they need something to clear their throat and that is why you see them spitting often because they make a run of maybe ten to 15 yards and they need air to breathe so they need to clear their throat before they get the air. It is not an intentional thing or something they derive pleasure from doing.”
Do football players spit?
It isn’t clear why we produce more MUC5B when exercising, but it may be because we breathe through our mouth more, so the mucus stops the mouth from drying out. Some sports, such as basketball and tennis, penalise players for spitting, but football and rugby don’t, so the players are free to expectorate!
Why do footballers spit?
When players ( especially Footballers ) run , the increased breathing rate causes the air mixed with dust , to enter their throat that give a choking feeling , compelling them to spit the saliva ( or mucus ) out
