Since the ouster of Lucien Favre last December, Borussia Dortmund have been looking for a coach for next season. And if the interim is currently provided by Edin Terzic, it is Marco Rose who will put his suitcases at Signal Iduna Park in a few months. After several weeks of rumor, the news was made official. And this is not without consequences for Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Eighth in the Bundesliga nine points from qualifying places in the Champions League, the Fohlen have just chained four disappointing results against Union Berlin (1-1), FC Cologne (2-1 defeat), Wolfsburg (0-0) and Mainz (2-1 defeat). A negative dynamic that contrasts with the very good month of January for Borussia Mönchengladbach who had returned to the fight for the top 4. Now in an unfavorable position, the German club will also have to negotiate the Champions League with the reception of Manchester City who crushes everything in its path to the Premier League. Not necessarily the ideal opponent to revive.
A decision that hurt
The last indiscretions of Bild are not really reassuring. Indeed, the German media explains that some stars of the team would have let go of the coach. In their statements, the players do not question their coach, but some have expressed their disappointment like Lars Stindl in GQ : “The team was of course a little disappointed, but made the decision very professionally. The coach explained the process of his decision making and explained the reasons for it. “ The climate is far from obvious and the supporters who were until then satisfied with the work of Marco Rose are more virulent.
The loss to Mainz 3-2 on Saturday sparked a lot of anger and the coach assumed its negative impact at a press conference: “Defeat is on my head. I am responsible for everything that has caused trouble this week. ” However, the subject keeps coming back to the table and Marco Rose was much more annoyed in an interview for DAZN: “It also has to do with the fact that we accomplished a lot here last year and a lot of people feel like we are not done yet. Which is in fact the case. And yet, I made a personal decision. It must be allowed, I think. Even if I don’t find approval everywhere, the most important thing is that I find my way back to success with the boys. ”
A position shared by Florian Neuhaus, a key player in Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder. This is what he said in an interview for Funke Mediengruppe : “This will not have a negative impact on our performance. If we win matches, everything will stay within limits. But if we lose matches, the topic will come up again and again. We want to counterbalance that with successful matches. ” He is not the only one to take the support of his coach since Jonas Hofmann accepted the choice of Marco Rose as he explained in the podcast kicker meets DAZN : “Of course, there are some who are a little disappointed about this, because we would have liked to continue on the same path. But according to his contract, Marco didn’t break any rules. ” The sacred union therefore returned before facing Manchester City and ending the Bundesliga season. It remains to be seen whether it will hold up or be shattered.
